In this third in a series of mini-interviews, learn more about our Threads of Success speakers and their presentations!
On Saturday, October 26, from 2:30-3:15 pm, Heidi will be presenting “What Makes a Great Pattern: Tips on Pattern Writing.”
Why did you want to participate in the Threads of Success conference?
I wanted to share what I have learned in the 20 years I have been in this industry. I believe if we share our knowledge with others, we can only make it better for everyone working in this industry.
What was the biggest challenge for you in breaking into this business?
It was my age. I started at 27 years old, in 1999. It was hard to have people take me seriously as a designer and professional. I was also introducing digital quilts to an industry that had only been showing actual product. I had to educate my clients on a different way of doing business and show them the positives to change.
What is the one piece of advice you wish you knew then that you do now?
I wish I had known the importance of marketing myself and my image. It is very easy to get caught up in the day-to-day work and overlook this very important part of business.
What is the most important thing you hope people take away from your presentation?
I am talking about pattern writing. This is the most important but least favorite part of developing a quilt project. I hope that people will learn a method of pattern writing that makes the task easier. I hope that by sharing my method of pattern writing with others, it will help them develop successful patterns.
