Why did you want to participate in the Threads of Success conference?
Building a profitable creative business and living a creative lifestyle is dear to my heart. (My mom was a professional artist, so I grew up with this.) I’ve spent more than 30 years exploring my creativity and helping creatives craft business success. This is the perfect way for me to continue to make a difference in the lives of creatives, especially those who want to break into our business. They will be the industry leaders of tomorrow.
What was the biggest challenge for you in breaking into this business?
When I started in the industry as a professional, it was as a quilt teacher. I also designed, made, and sold both quilts and art quilts, as well as finished garments. My career took lots of twists and turns over the years. My biggest challenge in the beginning was finding customers. We didn’t have the internet, mobile phones were rare, and social media was possibly a figment of someone’s imagination. Personal connections and snail mail were the way to go.
What is the one piece of advice you wish you knew then that you do now?
If I had to give one piece of advice that I wish I had taken to heart, it would be to risk sooner. This really means lots of things. Trust yourself that you know what you are doing. Put yourself out there without fears. Share yourself and love on your clients. Take that risk. You can’t rewarded without that.
What is the most important thing you hope people take away from your presentations?
I have five breakout sessions and each will have different goals. The bottom line is I want people to leave with a strategy that can put to use in their businesses, regardless of where they are now. The strategy is just one part. I also want them to know that they can do anything they put their mind to. And then take action.
Any other comments?
I’m so excited about the possibilities of this conference and grateful to be a participant. Going to conferences and taking workshops or courses all cut the learning curve. What a wonderful opportunity these attendees have right in front of them. I also hope the attendees make great connections with other attendees. The friends you make at a conference like this will be in your lives forever.
