On Saturday, October 26, from 9:30-10:15 am, Meg Cox will be presenting the seminar “Success Stories: Secrets of Those Who Made it Big in Quilting.” On the same day from 3:25-4:10 pm she’ll present “Better Quilt Photos Now!”
Why did you want to participate in the Threads of Success conference?
I want to be part of TOS because there's never been anything like it, and it's a rare opportunity for people to tap into the top managers, influencers and creators on the quilt scene.
What was the biggest challenge for you in breaking into this business?
One of the hardest things was not being able to travel a lot when my son was growing up. Because it helps to get on the road, visit big shows, and meet people. Once I started doing that, people were incredibly generous with their time and information.
What is the one piece of advice you wish you knew then that you do now?
That it's next to impossible for freelancers to earn a living through craft without creating multiple streams of income. I think the collective business wisdom at TOS will be a huge boon for people trying to find their place.
What is the most important thing you hope people take away from your presentation?
My lecture on success stories will show there isn't just one way to do well in this industry, and my PowerPoint on taking better quilt photos will prove that small changes can make a huge difference in making our quilts jump to the top. Most people will never see them in person, so we owe them that.
Any other comments?
I've found an incredible generosity in quilt world folks, one on one, and have benefited from how accessible most people are. But this gathering will generate a huge transfer of information and passion on a whole new level, and I'm psyched to be part of that!
