Why did you want to participate in the Threads of Success conference?

Because I believe in providing strong resources to entrepreneurs to assist them in their endeavors. I think Threads of Success could be very helpful to quilt and craft people interested in business or already running businesses.

What was the biggest challenge for you in breaking into this business?

I'm a bit of an odd fish. I come from academia and entrepreneurial background, and so I'm not a traditional quilt business person. That said, I think the number of things that the quilt world is can be overwhelming and intimidating. You have to find your niche, where you fit. That can be challenging.

What is the one piece of advice you wish you knew then that you do now?

As an entrepreneur, just jump in—don't over plan, and know that sometimes it takes time to figure things out—and that figuring out where to jump in is part of the journey too.

What is the most important thing you hope people take away from your presentations?

Proactive steps in understanding intellectual property-—understanding what it is, and how to strategize about copyright, trademarks, patents, right of publicity, and trade secrets. That's what is the essence of most businesses, and so I think super important to know before problems occur. Make IP your super power.

Any other comments?

I'm thrilled to be part of Quilt Inc.'s Threads of Success. This is such an important organization to the quilt industry, and I think this program will be so beneficial to tackling what the quilt world is now. I am particularly pleased to see Cheryl Sleboda steering the ship, as her proven track record in the comic book industry makes me feel like we can learn and grow as a community, and that Quilts, Inc. will be at the center of that track.
